Chapter Eighteen

Landon’s temper could erupt under a variety of circumstances or in the company of certain types of men. Mr. Horace Cromwell just so happened to satisfy both at this very moment. The sniveling man sat on the opposite side of the desk, his head hanging dejectedly as he blew his nose. A more pitiful sight Landon doubted he had ever seen.

Mr. Cromwell was the one who had asked for an audience. If it were not for Miss Cromwell, Landon would have either ignored the request or refused it outright. Given her clear affection for her uncle, however, he had agreed. But being anywhere near the man made his skin crawl.

“Thank you again for paying my debt to Bellamy, my lord,” Mr. Cromwell mumbled into his handkerchief. “I’m so relieved knowing he’ll not be coming after me.”

Landon glared through the strands of hair that helped conceal his face. He had learned long ago that doing so, coupled with the mask, made his adversaries—as well as everyone else—sit up and listen.

“You are a fool for becoming involved with him in the first place, Cromwell,” he growled. “Do it again, and you may find yourself in even direr straits. And I may not be there to save you. What will your niece think of you then?”

“I… I’m in need of a loan, my lord.”

“You’re out of money? Again?” Landon found keeping the incredulous tone from his voice impossible. It was clear Mr. Cromwell’s wisdom knew plenty of bounds.

“It’s just that I must repair the roof, you see, and business tends to be slow this time of year. But it must be repaired before the autumn rains set in. Just a modest five hundred pounds or so.”

“Five hundred pounds to repair a roof?” Landon asked, sitting up straighter. “What materials will you be using? Gold?”

Mr. Cromwell shifted in his seat, the grip on the hat he clutched tightening, making the rim crinkle. “Well, it’s not just the roof, my lord. A window needs replacing and there is a loose floorboard in the bedroom. Then there is—”

Landon raised a hand and Mr. Cromwell clamped his mouth shut. How was it that this man had so many financial struggles when Miss Cromwell’s father had likely left her in decent standing? Plus, he had taken double the amount he was asking now for that blasted elixir.

Yet had Landon not also heard that many of the more valuable items in Humphrey House had been sold? That was what Wilson had told him.

“You were willing to forfeit your life to me, or so you said. But that was a lie, was it not?” When Mr.
